Major News on a falling Market $TSLA $TWTR $TRIP $PEP $AIG $CBS $WYNN $GRPN

U.S. stock futures are down sharply in premarket trading Thursday amid a wider global market selloff as falling crude prices once again take their toll on markets.

Brent crude was down $0.57 to $30.27 per barrel while West Texas crude contracts for March delivery were down $0.98 to $26.47 per barrel.

Asian markets once again led the way down as Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed trading 3.9% lower and Japan's Nikkei fell 2.3%. The Shanghai Composite Index is closed this week in recognition of China's Lunar New Year holiday.

In Europe, France's CAC 40 was falling the hardest, down nearly 4%, while the German DAX and U.K. FTSE 100 were down 2.2% and 2.01%, respectively.

Today, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen continues her testimony before Congress. Yellen began her testimony Wednesday, telling U.S. lawmakers that the central bank recognizes that there are still plenty of obstacles for the U.S. economy to overcome. She did not, however, give any solid indications on what policy tweaks the bank was prepared to make to overcome those headwinds.

The last leg of earnings season continues today. More than 75% of company's scheduled to report their quarterly results have done so already.

Netflix has become known for the growing library of original programming available on its subscription video service. But perhaps the Net video leader's most ongoing dramatic story is that of its stock.

During 2015, Netflix provided a year-long thrill ride, soaring more than 130% to more than $114 a share, making it the S&P 500's top-performing stock.

Expect more drama in 2016. Already this year, Netflix rose 9% on Jan. 6 after announcing its global expansion to 190 countries. Then, shares declined 9% last week after ITG Investment Research forecasted a miss on new U.S. subscriber numbers for the quarter. ITG expects Netflix to announce 1.13 million new U.S. subscribers when it releases its fourth quarter earnings Tuesday after the market closes. That would represent a 13% miss of Netflix's own expectations of 1.3 million new paying U.S. subs during the period.

Toss in a monthly price increase that Netflix enacted in October 2015 -- two concurrent HD streams now cost $9.99, a $1 increase -- and even analysts who are bullish on the stock admit to some cautiousness. "We would note that there is likely a great deal of uncertainty around U.S. sub adds this quarter," said RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney in a note last week. Still, he expects Netflix to hit its U.S. subscriber target and has a $140 target price on Netflix (NFLX) stock, currently at $104.04.

For the year, Netflix shares are down nearly 5%, compared to 8% for the S&P 500.

Lackluster -- or impressive -- subscriber growth can result in big share price swings for Netflix, which has more than 70 million streaming subscribers worldwide. Back in the third quarter, Netflix fell 270,000 short of its own target of adding 1.15 million U.S. streaming customers, blaming some of the shortfall on customers being issued new credit cards and debit cards with built-in chips. Shares fell more than 8% the day after those results were released.

Similarly, after second quarter 2015 subscriber numbers were about 770,000 higher than expected, stock rose 18%. Unlike with other companies in which earnings per share and revenue are much of the focus, with Netflix "it’s all about the subscriber numbers," said Christine Short, senior vice president of crowdsourced financial estimates site Estimize.

As for earnings and revenue, Wall Street expectations for Netflix are earnings of 2 cents per share and revenue of $1.827 billion, according S&P Capital IQ Consensus Estimates. Estimize's community is more optimistic, with expectations of earnings of 4 cents and revenue of $1.833 billion, Short said.

But she notes that looking only at subscriber numbers is risky, because competition in the streaming space from Amazon, Hulu and traditional providers such as CBS, HBO and Showtime could be cutting into Netflix's strength. At the Golden Globe Awards held Jan. 10, Amazon's own original series Mozart of the Jungle came away with the only awards (two) won by streaming services, even though Netflix had more nominations (nine).

"Netflix has clearly proven they can produce great content," Short said. But Amazon's rise "is somewhat worrisome for Netflix," she said, "as streaming is only a small part of the Amazon business model ... yet they are still able to take a bite out of Netflix’s bread and butter business."
